Every April, Earth Day reminds us to be more intentional about our impact on the planet. This year’s theme, “Our Power, Our Planet”, puts emphasis on small, daily actions each of us can take to reduce our personal impact on the environment. But what does that actually look like in practice?

Running errands? Consider a bike!

Let’s start with how we get around our communities. A study by the League of American Bicyclists found that although half of all errands and recreational trips happen within three miles of home, only 2% are done by bike. Three miles is a distance most Americans could manage on two wheels, so why don’t they? Many report a lack of access to equipment, such as bikes, helmets, and bike storage such as baskets or bags. On the first point, bikeshare provides bikes throughout city neighborhoods to close the gaps in access to the most expensive equipment in that equation – the bike itself. Riders just need to make sure to wear a helmet.
