Have you actively commuted recently?

If your answer is “no,” you’re not alone; most Americans haven’t.

“Active commuting,” according to the National Institutes of Health, means biking, walking, or taking public transit to work. Despite the many documented public benefits, most communities lack the infrastructure that allows people to safely and easily get from Point A to Point B without a car, leading to relatively low active commuting numbers compared to peer nations.

According to the League of American Bicyclists, the top four cities for active commuting in the United States are New York, Washington D.C., Boston, and San Francisco – all places where bikeshare is readily available as part of the local infrastructure.

To celebrate National Bike Month, we looked at bikeshare ridership numbers in the month of May across America’s top four active commuting cities over the past several years and found an encouraging trend:
